Cafe des chats.

I finally did it! I visited the most charming cafe in Paris and it was more than puurrrfect. Okay, that was bad I’m sorry ;) But, do you still remember my post a long long time ago, when I told you that Paris would have their own cat-cafe?! I won’t blame you if you don’t remember it anymore because that was in 2013… I feel a bit ashamed that it took me so long to visit my little friends in Paris but, it was worth the waiting.

The first thing I saw when I arrived at the cafe were a few little pink noses curled up behind the window. The urge was to big for me to pet them. So I had to go inside as quick as I could go. For the hygiene I had to disinfect my hands before I could take place between the cats.

Their is a ground floor and a basement. The basement looked like an old cave, it was so cozy! It reminded me a bit of Shakespeare and company, an old English bookstore in Paris. Only here it was filled with a lot of cats instead of books, even better if you ask me!

All the food on the menu is organic and home made. You have to try the ‘romeo and julia’ tea, it was delicious. The best part still has to come…*drum-rolls*… it’s forbidden to feed the cats, so you can keep all the food for yourself and you won’t fall for their irresistibly puppy eyes.

I want to give a big applause to the owner of cafe des chats, Margaux Gandelon. She really made a great home for these little friendly creatures. There were many cozy corners, tunnels, baskets, pillows and of course leather sofas where they can scratch all day! For me it was hard to believe that all these pretty cats where abandoned, found on the streets and adopted from shelters. I still don’t understand why humans can be so mean to leave these cats on their own. Gladly these cats were lucky and found a warm home with the love and attention they deserve, but there are still a lot of cats that wait for a home. So, I hope that everyone who want to buy a cat (or dog) don’t forget about all the lonely animals in the shelters. They are just as great as any other animal and ready to be petted.

If you want to visit cafe des chats, it’s advisable to make a reservation because the cats are really popular. It would be a shame if it’s full when you’re there. Oh, and don’t forget to read the rules about cafe des chats on their website. For example: sleeping cats may not be petted and you can take photo’s but without a flash!

Aux Merveilleux de Fred.

Aux Merveilleux bannerThe Marais is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Paris when it comes to food and art. I love to wander around between the charming streets and enjoying the smell of falafels. For the people who don’t know that much about the Marais, let me give you a few key words: art, food, history and shopping. Four things that go very well together. Today I’m going to write about a bakery which fits perfectly in the lifestyle of the Marais. Say hello to Aux Merveilleux de Fred! 

First let me tell you why I think this bakery has all the four key words I told you about:
1. Art – The pastries look like little art works.
2. Food – You’re stupid if you don’t eat them.
3. History – As many iconic bakeries in Paris, also Aux Merveilleux de Fred has an interesting history.
4. Shopping – If you buy these beauties, it counts as shopping!

The mastermind behind these delicious pastries is Frederic Vaucamps. A french man who opened his first bakery (1982) in Hazebrouck, a small town very close to the Belgium border. Frederic Vaucamps had to work very hard for his success because only 15 years later he achieved great success with the remake of the old recipe of the merveilleux pastry. He turned a forgotten pastry  into a refreshing new concept, meringue surrounded by chocolate whipped cream and chocolate chips. Mmmmm, if I only think about it, I feel the meringue melting on my tongue!

Today Aux Merveilleux de Fred has many stores all over the world. From our beloved city Paris to the big apple of New York City. The success of this bakery? You tell me! I think it has to do with their way of specialization. One store for one product (Actually two products, they also sell brioche loaf in different flavors). You know the quality has to be good when you put so much love into your pastries. What makes it even more special is that you can see how they create the pastries, they bake them in an open space.

All together, enough reasons to try one at Aux Merveilleux de Fred.

Cafe Le Quasimodo, Paris

Union soupIf you’re in Paris you have to try the union soup at cafe Le Quasimodo near the Notre Dame, it was soooo good!

The staff is friendly but does have their own will. In Paris, the customer won’t be treated like a king. I like that way of working because respect should come from both sides. You get what you deserve. If you are nice to them, they will be kind to you. A tip from me to you is: always be kind to the waiters working at French restaurants. Try to speak your best French and show them that you appreciate their work. Otherwise you end up at a little table right in front of the door ;)

Falafel in Paris.

falafelMy mother is a vegetarian so before we go on a trip together, we make sure we know where to buy food like falafel. Like any other big city, Paris has many shoarma restaurants or take away (a emporter) places, which often sell vegan- or falafel dishes.

Pitzman is our favorite place to buy Falafel. The staff is friendly and provides quickly a good meal. For falafel you pay €5.50 (take away) and for a whole dish only €9.50 (also take away). That’s for Parisian prices certainly not expensive. Pitzman is located in the Marais and I’m in love with the look of the restaurant. The chosen colors are so beautiful and match perfectly with the surrounding. From the outside it looks bigger than it actually is inside. Pitzman is one of the few places in Paris where the Jewish community comes together on Sunday to enjoy each others company. It’s such a photogenic restaurant, but remember that it’s a restaurant. Always be respectful for the people and take into account their privacy ;)

Tip for a sunny day: buy some take away falafel and take it with you to the oldest park in Paris, Place des Vosges.

What is your favorite macaron and from who?

I don’t know why, but I’m hungry for macarons right now! Perhaps it’s because of this delicious photo or maybe it’s because I really loved the Iced Mint Macarons of Ladurée. The good news about that is that they are finally back in the assortment of Ladurée again. Thanks guys! You have made ​​this girl very happy :)

5 reasons why Paris is cooler than London (3/5)

Reason 3 is the lack of ‘bakeries’. 

I missed them so much in London. Besides the sights and public toilets you never need to search for something delicious in Paris. Bakeries and pastry stores are everywhere. World famous names, a little less known names, charming, cozy, large or small…they are all there! When you visit a city very often you create your own favorite places. That’s why I also have my favorite bakeries in Paris: La Parisienne, Coquelieot en Poilâne and for a delicious bag of madeleines I go to Blé Sucré.

In London, there were also a few bakeries to find, but they missed that cozy atmosphere and local products. I also got the feeling that little bakeries and stores are being overwhelmed by the large advertising signs from brands like the Subway… such a shame. Does anyone know if small businesses get the opportunity to grow in London?Macarons
It’s a fact that Paris has a lot more bakeries and pastry shops than London, but Paris also scores some extra points with their macarons and galettes. Both pastries with a history.

The lesson I’ve learned about this is that you have to ” be so good they can’t ignore you”. Stand out in big cities like Paris and London!

The history of the macaron

Sweet, colored and it tastes heavenly. I think we all know what I’m talking about…macarons! I’m crazy about them and I’ve tried them almost everywhere in Paris. It’s so cool to experience all those little artworks at different bakeries or at the famous pastry stores. The Parisians sure know how to make great combinations and how to take care of a big variety. I’ve had lots of crazy flavors. They got olive, lavender, cheese, pistachio, chili, honey…I can go on for hours but I think you got my point ;)

I’ve once wrote a post about Ladurée, a famous pastry store in Paris. They invented the French macaron we eat today. A fun fact is that the beginning of the macaron starts in Italy. Yeah, I was a bit shocked too, but the meringue-based pastry is named after the Italian word for pasta ‘Maccarone’. The Italian monasteries made ​​biscuits ​​from a mixture of ground almonds with sugar and protein, similar to our macaroons. Catherine di Medici (Queen of France from 1547 to 1559) introduced this cake in France. It was mentioned there Maccherone. After many, many years, the French bakery Ladurée in Paris got the idea to combine two macarons with a filling, and that my dear followers, was the beginning of the macaron we know today. 

The macaron is so popular in French that they got their own special day, ‘Le Jour du Macaron’. I haven’t experienced it myself, but it’s on my bucket list. The proceeds of all the macarons go to a good charity. During ‘Le Jour du Macaron’ there are different routes trough Paris to pass unique locations where you can taste some good macarons!
